WSP is a global consulting and engineering firm and offers technical expertise and strategic advice to clients in the water domain. We offer you the opportunity to gain experience within our Water & Environment department, both as an internship and as a research internship. We are looking for someone with a keen interest in streams and rivers and the cooperation between various government parties.

This is what you will do

Climate change and the associated extremes of high and low water pose major challenges for water managers at national and regional level. In our projects, we increasingly come to the conclusion that the challenges in the water domain require different forms of cooperation between governments and with society.

Think of extreme showers in the Limburg hills that lead to flooding or desiccation of the floodplains of our rivers, which puts pressure on natural values and agricultural use. In both cases, it is not only about a technical solution to the issue, but also about the question: how do governments and social partners work together?

Research questions that the internship can focus on are, for example: How can task-oriented work improve cooperation between governments on the major societal challenges? What form of cooperation is needed to enable integrated area planning with sectoral resources? We would be happy to discuss your ideas and the concrete interpretation of your research question with you.

On the other hand, we offer you the opportunity to participate in projects and do a real internship. Projects you may work on are the various dike improvements along the major rivers that we are working on and various stream restoration and flooding projects in Limburg. Check out our website for more examples. Our clients are mostly water boards, Rijkswaterstaat and provinces.

Department of WATER & Environment

You will become part of the Water & Environment department and work alongside our specialists. We challenge you to apply your skills within our consultancy and engineering firm! The team you will be part of consists of about 40 people. The work and management mainly take place at our location in Nieuwegein. It is possible that you will also occasionally visit another location and get to know the company and its projects better. On the one hand, we offer a research question and, on the other hand, the opportunity to participate in projects. Together we will determine the balance between them.

You feel completely at home within the working area of rivers and cooperating government parties. You enjoy working on a project-based basis and you are able to contribute your knowledge of water management and governance to projects. You are eager to learn and have a go-getter mentality with good communication skills. You are following a university education in human geography, planning, spatial planning, environment & society, environmental & infrastructure planning or similar studies.
